Hostas are gratifying plants because, among other qualities, they develop quickly... by the second year they have grown enough to put on a very decent show. Culver's Root, on the other hand, is best suited to the patient plantsman. Even in good growing conditions it takes several seasons to provide a good show. Mine is in its fourth year in the ground... and just now in its first year to offer a substantial display of stems and blooms. Having said that I can say, with absolute certainty, that the wait has been worth it.
The genus name refers to its similarity to Veronica [the Speedwells]. The species epithet refers to its first being discovered in Virginia. Culver was undoubtedly a pioneer plantsman who discovered it.
Its blooms may be diminutive and its period of bloom may be short... but during that all too brief period it makes a regal and elegant addition to the garden.
