From what I understand, the species Spiraea cantoniensis has single flowers. There is a selection of Reeves Spiraea, 'Lanceata', that has double flowers.

There may very well be misidentified photos dispersed throughout the range of species and selections of Spiraea in Plants Database. This site relies upon some level of knowledge by contributors, as well as review by the admins. Spiraea species can look remarkably similar (as can many other closely related plant species), and overlapping common names and proliferation of selections and hybrids can lead to confusion in properly identifying, naming, and placing images in the appropriate entry.

If someone has a cultivar but doesn't know exactly which one, the species entry would be the correct place to upload a pic.

I agree, but I guess the issue is that some people DO think they know exactly which one. This entry has photos of single and double flowers, they cannot both be correct. I think some confusion comes of people buying plants at nurseries that don't have them labeled correctly, or being given a plant by someone who tells them the wrong name.

Something like double blooms is the kind of thing that manifests as a cultivar, from the straight species. But if there are multiple double-flowered cultivars, it might not be known exactly which one it is. I'm not a Spiraea person so I can't help compare cultivars.
