Thank you. Dogwoods are great. I hear they don't do well in full sun but all of the ones I've seen seem to be doing fine out there.

full sun in zone 4 is not the same as full sun in zone 7 and the amount of water it gets will factor in as well

Astoria NY is Zone 7 according to PlantMaps:

I don't think that type of dogwood would survive in Zone 4, if it did I would want some for sure!

Common dogwoods will survive in zone 4. They grow in all zones of the US except desert areas. I wasn't meaning my comment to mean specifically dogwoods anyway, I was just stating that one person's idea of full sun, may not be another person's circumstances.

But speaking specifically about the dogwood, I'm venturing a guess that a dogwood needs afternoon shade in zone 7 to be really happy. But again if it were supplementally watered, maybe it would do okay. If you planted that same tree in zone 4 with afternoon shade it would probably live but not bloom. I am in zone 6 and have a dogwood in full shade, it grows fine but has never bloomed for me. My dogwood in full sun do fine for me.

Yes there are many very hardy dogwoods, but talking about the specific ID plant I was just clarifying for anyone reading from a colder zone that the large flowered ones like Cornus kousa and Cornus florida are more limited. Although zone 5 is often given as the coldest for them I have seen them listed for zone 4 but have never seen one in this area. But then not all zones with the same number have the same climate.

From this page it looks as though the ID plant is Cornus florida:
