No, I think I see the doubly pinnate compound leaves of Aralia spinosa.
Plant it and they will come.

Thanks! Your quick reply encouraged me to wade into the brambles for a closer look (I'll be picking thorns out of my legs for the rest of the day). Definitely not Elderberry but there were no thorns anywhere on the tree. Here is a closer look at the leaves.

Thanks for going the extra mile! I am wrong, thorns would be very obvious on my guess.
Sorry, I don't know what.
Plant it and they will come.

I appreciate you trying Sally. I planted 12 elderberry baby plants in March; three different varieties from three different vendors. A week or two later I saw the tree that I posted the picture of and thought "there's a $100 I didn't need to spend!".
The leaves on the tree in question look very similar to those on the new elderberries, but shorter and more serrated. The tree trunk even have those node points I've read about on the web. Again, thanks for the reply.

I'll admit to not looking closely at the one elderberry I have .. did you note if the leaves on plant in question come out on the stem on pairs/opposite, like elderberry, I think do.?
Plant it and they will come.

I think I misread your question Sally; yes, on the tree in question, lateral stems come off of the main trunk in pairs and offset maybe 30 degrees but a bit random. From these laterals, the compound leaves come off in pairs but not offset. The elderberries have a similar structure minus the trunk.

Ah, that last picture DOES immediately strike me as elderberry. The others seem different. You would have some things there (hotter) than I would commonly find.
My elderberries is budding, I would think elderberries in your zone are blooming or in berry (not you brand new ones necessarily). When I notice them here in the wild, I think they like moist settings.

I think your plant in question is 'doubly pinnately compound" which helps eliminate many plants.
Plant it and they will come.

Yep except for the muscadines that are still in bloom, everything else has set fruit. Thank you for teaching me a bit about plant identification!

Could it be a chinaberry tree? It looks similar to some I've seen in Texas.

Thanks Janie, you may be on to something! I found some pictures of the leaf structure and they are spot on to the one's I took. Thanks a bunch!
