I just happened to see this thread so I thought that I would pass on what I know. If the wood @ the heart of the piece, either green wood or wood that is not absolutely 110% bone dry, when you seal it and paint it, any trapped moisture in that wood is going to keep on trying to escape.
The rate at which that happens is driven by temperature extremes. If you place the object in the sun and it gets warmed by the sun, that speeds up that inner moistures attempt to escape.
Now please keep it in mind that I am no expert on wood but I have done my fair share when it comes to wooden yard art. Primarily bird houses or benches. If that original wood is not 110% in the beginning, this can happen. I have dealt with this time and time again.
Good luck though but I don't think that you can stop it 100%!
