I love the look of Peace Lilies because they are so graceful looking and I can't think of any other indoor plant that resembles them... maybe there is something else out there I could try, an alternative to a Peace Lily?

I don't know what it is... every Peace Lily I have bought has died within a month or two. They start by there blooms going droopy and going from white to green then once all the blooms have died off the rest of the plant follows. I really struggle to keep these plants alive.

No matter what I have done they decline.

The Peace Lily is low light tolerant and can handle a bit of accidental over watering. I can keep these in lower light and they decline. I can put them in a brighter spot and they still decline. I give them enough water they still decline. How do you keep these plants alive?

I know they have very fine sensitive hairline roots that can't be disturbed, that I do know of...

Any ideas what could be going wrong?

I would really like to put them in planters like these for my 1800s living room. These plants have the perfect look.

I grow mine as aquatics. Its Hot Hot Hot here (97 today, heat index 106) and its a good way to keep some plants watered. I grow all my peace lilies and colocasias as aquatics in the summer, the peace lilies as aquatics year round. Helps keep them from freezing too

There are so many similar posts about PLs. I've had them at times over the years but they don't seem to last long. I think they need a really loose, chunk, airy soil so it can stay very moist and still have plenty of oxygen. Maybe try a clay pot inside your decorative pot since the clay breathes so well.

Over the years, most of the best looking PLs that I've seen were in water. There was a phase about 10-ish years ago when there were a bunch of them with Betta fish swimming around the roots. Those folks had vases that looked like extra large bulb vases, so the plant didn't fall all the way into the water.

Other plants for a similar look could be self-heading Philodendron, Homalomena, cast iron (Aspidistra), dumb cane (Dieffenbachia), Chinese evergreens (Aglaonema). The plain green A. modestum is very similar but with a stem. One or some of those might like the conditions you have to offer.

Sorry to say, I just cannot grasp why they all die for you. The blooms going white to green and brown is normal and no problem, and lack of bloom for some periods is normal too.

Aspidistra looks similar in my eye. And I think it is historically appropriate to the urn.

That's hilarious, Sally! When you play it, does it have captions? My captions were even more funny than the song. I can't even type some of it here, too risquรฉ!! I'm not sure the person who uploaded the vid included that captioning.

Hmm... I just clicked it again and there are some icons at the bottom. One of them is a box that says CC. Apparently it toggles closed captioning on/off and mine was toggled on. This is my first time noticing it, but it could have been there for a long time. I hardly ever watch vids unless I'm playing my "liked vids" list of songs.

I think you'll get even more laughs if you toggle that on while watching that vid. The talk to text (I guess?) is really struggling on it.

I'm not sure it would be possible to start with a seed that way, but agree, it would be fun if possible.

Most "soil" comes off of roots very easily, but if a plant is bought in sphagnum or fibrous peat, that won't come off completely unless you have the patience to spend hours with tweezers.

All I have ever done with mine was take it out of the pot, leaving the dirt, and throw it into the water.

I don't doubt that would work, and handy info for someone wanting to do something like your micro pond example, but wouldn't be pretty in a clear vase, if that is the goal. I don't want to promote any particular search engine but if one searches their chosen one for images of "peace lily with betta fish" you'll see countless examples of PLs in vases.

Tiffany my goal is NOT to grow as a Houseplant LOL. I try to keep as few houseplants as possible. These 'microponds' as you call them serve an important function on my property. Not only do they allow the plants to grow huge and to the best of their ability, by providing a constant source of water and nutrients for them in summer and insulation from cold in winter, but they also are little ecosystems all on their own. I have about 20 small ponds, either container ponds or inground ponds, for plants on my property. They hold everything from Peace lilies to Colocasias, water lilies, lotus, aquatic crinums, dieffenbachia, aglaonema, anubias, arrowhead to Egyptian papyrus...they also provide a source of water for my wildlife in times of drought (I get deer, armadillos, foxes, coyotes, opossums, bobcats, raccoons and even bats drinking from my ponds), incubators for important creatures like dragonfly larvae, frogs and toads, habitat for adult frogs...the benefits of them are endless. Much more useful than growing a plant as a houseplant.
These are my 2 big aquatic peace lilies. They grow directly in the water/old pond muck. They are 100% care free. As long as there is adequate water in the tub they take care of themselves

These are come colocasia I have in another container. They do not even have any substrate. I just toss colocasia in bareroot. They grow huge, and I don;t have to worry about keeping them watered with its 98 F like it was here this week. They can also tolerate full sun when grown this way.

This sort of thing isn;t for everyone, but, people should be aware that this is possible. Many people do not know that their plants can be grown in this manner, and a lot of people like to try this once they find out.

I've been growing 3 ZZ plants in water for about two years now as well as ZZ plants growing in soil. In some cases it can be a lot more practical to grow some plant in just water because that way you only need to top the water up every so often, it can make life a lot easier with certain plants.

Are you watering with tap water? Is it treated? there could be something in it that is killing the peace lily. Thinking
