Hi everbody

I'm interested to hear how and when you all fertilize your Clematis Smiling

What NPK-mixture is best?
Do you use liquid fetilizer or organic (pellets?)
And is there a difference between fertilizing Clematis in pots or in the ground?

Thank You!

Welcome Rose346!!

A year ago I started to use the 3 in on Rose Fertlizer on the whole yard. That includes all the potted Brugmansia and Clematis! Do not put it by the stem at the soil level. I do this every couple months and noticed less bugs and nicer plants. So this year we have used it again. With climate change you have to watch what you use if temps rise. Once the clematis is over 5 foot tall we will use bloom booster fertilizer once a week. We treat the ones in the ground as we do the ones in the pots but the pots do dry out so you will have to pay attention to them and water more. I don't recommend fertilizing if the temps are over 85-90 degrees. Hope this helps!

Thank you, Karmahappytoes!

I live in the Netherlands and temps of 85 or higher are called a 'heatwave' here Hilarious! and are not common.
The 3 in one Rose Ferilizer you mention, does it say on the package what the NPK-values are? (NPK = nitrogen, phospherus and potassium)

Welcome! Rose
I encourage you to continue your research about fertilizers. However the product recommended above includes a systemic insecticide which is toxic or lethal to bees and other insects. I'm sure that isn't what you had in mind. Please don't use it.

I used to dump part of a bag of dry manure on mine until the bags got too heavy as I grew older.

Arlene, may I ask when did you do the dumping? Fortunately I've got plenty so it possibly is my easiest way. I'm new to clematis growing so I'm trying to figure out the best strategy ( organic preferably and if in-house available even better)

I used to do it in March just as the clematises began to emerge.
