I am wondering if the iris farm you saw was near Salem, that would have been the famous Schreiner's Iris Gardens. A large growing field and their display gardens I believe can be seen from the freeway. A stunning place! Many of the major iris hybridizers are in Oregon.


Louisiana Iris do come in different colors, here are a couple I grow:

It turns out that of the peppers in the back that I'm pinching, I did indeed leave one of them unpinched as a test. I went out just now and took photos.



These plants are growing next to each other. The one on the left is pinched. They are small (only a couple weeks in the ground) but you can see a difference between the pinched one and the other one!

That's amazing Dave and my peppers are even smaller than that. Probably a good two weeks behind yours.

As for the onions, on this side of the country, in the winter, we can buy something called Texas sweet onion. They are so good. But we can only get them in winter which is good because we can't get the Vidalia's at that time.

I'm not exactly sure what a texas sweet onion is and I think it's probably the whole family of onions that grow well in Texas. It's likely that what you got was the 1015Y which is our favorite to grow, by far.

That's funny Vic, I was doing the same thing!

Since we're so deep down in this thread, my confession is safely buried: irises are the "popular perennial" that I am least knowledgeable about. I love them, I've just never really expressed a huge interest in them. Trish loves them and has them everywhere and I enjoy looking at them, but I don't "geek out" on them like I do everything else. I think that's changing though, the more I see of them.

I got a little caught up in collecting them after my stop at Schrieners a couple of years ago, mostly because I saw them displayed in a mixed bed setting. I have never been one for an all iris, rose or daylily bed, I always love mixing them with all kinds of perennials. Iris are a nice way to add color before daylilies start and a nice companion to the roses.
Before, I never had room so now I am having fun adding all kinds of plants!

Funny you should say that, Sue. For years I've had 'daylily beds', 'iris beds' 'rose garden' - now I look out and realize that over the years they've gotten all mixed up and no longer hold just one plant. Everything evolves, I guess - gardens particularly.

I've always had irises and daylilies, but these woke me up to varieties and colors.

Sue, the difference though, is that you knew there were no reds whereas I was guessing I mix all my plants too
