I had my granddaughters for the weekend and they love to make garden projects. So I found some cute ideas and let the girls (who are both under 12) try their talent and hand at these projects:
The girls painted faces on the clay pots after I spray painted them with a kind of skin tone exterior spray paint to seal them. They drew the face features on with a pencil first and then used exterior paint to actually paint the faces. They decorated them with dots and painted the clay sauces to go with them. Then they picked out the plant that they each wanted to use as "hair" for their face pots. They turned out really cute. The glasses were cheap Dollar Tree store glasses. We attached the glasses to the pots using a thin strip of velcro to the glasses arms and the sides of the pot.
The other project also came from Dollar Tree. They are the yellow plastic margarita drink glasses. The girls added pebbles, potting mix, then two plants (Earth Star Bromeliad and Hawthornia plants), cut out moss to cover over potting mix around the plants, added more pebbles to outline their pond, added blue sand (also Dollar Tree purchase), and minature animals (which are actually children's buttons from a fabric store), and a parasol to top it all off. They turned out very cute! And the girls also made tie-dye shirts which you can see in the background. Kept them busy all weekend and they had a lot of fun! So if you are looking for ideas on what to do with the grandkids or your own children during the summer or a weekend, this might give you an idea or two. Enjoy!
This is my face pot. I chose to use the funny reading glasses instead of sunglasses for mine. We each chose a different kind of plant for the hair:
