Any way to tell if root rot is present here without more cleaning? This is the first time I've seen it this adenium out of soil since I had it shipped to me when it had no leaves. It's leaves started yellowing a few weeks ago, I have another forum post discussing that, and it has lost several since then. Additionally, how should I repot this adenium, and when? And how and where should it be stored if i must wait.

no signs of root rot ....

yellowing leaves are fairly common on adenium .. and nothing to be concerned about -
but - yellowing leaves on adenium mean only 1 of 2 very different things ....
1) if potting mix is exceptionally dry ...yellowing leaves means lack of water - water ASAP
2) if potting mix is exceptionally wet ...yellowing leaves means too much water - stop watering ASAP

Potting mix that I have used for years .....it is very fast draining, chunky, gritty, sandy and perfect for wet areas of the country ..... water flows through and very little water is retained - but, fertilizing regularly is a must

Heads-up - some of this Potting mix may, or may not be easy to find ...

Mix together:

1 Part: Coconut Coir -
1 Part: Poultry Grit (chicken grit) /or Pea Gravel
1 Part: Perlite - coarse
1 Part: Sand - coarse Builder's Sand, or Leveling Sand, or Horticultural Sand (sift out fine silt)
1 Part:: Lump Charcoal - Break-up (crush larger pieces) (sift out fine silt)
1 Part: Lava-rock – (volcanic cinders or pumice) (crush larger pieces) (sift out fine silt)

Optional: mix with above

1 Part: Redwood Bark / Orchid (Phalaenopsis) Mix - Break-up, cut or crush larger stems & bark
1 Part: Perlite - coarse

Unable to find Coconut Coir ?? - substitute with regular cactus mix

If unable to locate the ingredients above:
Use a half and half mixture of Orchid / Phalaenopsis Soil Mix (mostly bark and rocks)
mixed with Cactus / Palm Mix

you will want to find a bigger pot than the width of the actual root spread

pre-mix the potting mix outlined above

find a shallow - unglazed pot with drainage hole ....Terracotta azalea pots work perfect

purchase some Osmocote 14-14-14 slow release fertilizer

next -- put a 1" deep layer of rocks on bottom of pot

next -- put several handfuls of potting mix in pot ....layer in a teaspoon of Osmocote

Thumb of 2022-07-25/deepsouth/462faa

next -- place your plant in pot ...then back-fill with potting mix layering in 3 more teaspoons of Osmocote (evenly layer with each layer of potting mix)

you can safely plant higher in the pot ....but try for, up to the green line

try to leave a 1" gap between potting media and top of pot .....

wait a day ...then saturate plant ...water in several passes ....make certain water flows freely from the pot ....and never allow potted plant to sit in a dish of water

when in doubt - it is better *not to water*

root rot is caused by too much water ...it is often fatal ....

After way too long of having the adenium out of pot, I did follow your instructions. My fault on that. It drains way better than the mess I made before. Thank you. Here's hoping the plant will work with it after what it had been in. Do you know any other plants that would work well in the mix? It seems pretty good but I only have the one adenium and don't plan on more right now.

leftover potting mix ?

I would keep leftover around just for the next adenium repot ...if not next spring...the following spring for sure

will repot every other year .....just because plants "take off" with a fresh batch
