Cinda I can completely identify with the two finger typing and poor spelling! Way back in school the teacher gave me extra marks if I spelled my name correctly!
I'm going to be in big trouble at work this fall when ALL our work is being switched to the computer. No breaks for me just so I can catch up with the typing.

I do know of the Doctrine of Signatures but many, many plants get names in local or isolated areas where that name is in common use by the people in those particular areas and I was just wondering if lungbane was one of them. I've been asked about plants at work where the person is describing a plant that sounds familiar but I haven't a clue by the name they call it. When they show me a picture I can identify it right away. Where they had come from the people there always called the plants by the names they were using. Most people don't or can't use botanical names because they are long cumbersome and difficult to remember, spell and pronounce.

Cumbersome and challenging, Brian, but you've given one big argument for using botanical names;
and think it becomes more important in purchasing plants.

Like others, I'm quite hostile to the business trend to use selling names, rather than cultivar (viz. the horticultural extension of botanical) names.
A properly assigned cultivar name is unique to the particular plant and nobody can own it.

I can relate to the name spelling , I was in 5th grade before I knew how to spell my middle name

And for Latin I should know how to pronounce, but only can remember a very few words from 3 years of Latin in High school.

I will almost not buy a plant if it does not have the ''real'' name attached , you just never know what you are getting.

Trollius is hardy and long-lived here.
The cultivar we see most often for sale is 'Golden Queen', but orange or yellow, it's great perennial value for the money.
It's also very low maintenance, never running or seeding;
and some plants even have a later second boom.

Meant to include this picture, taken today, of Phlox 'Nora Leigh'.

Never used to be big on perennials with variegated leaves, but have now changed my mind.
Think they add some variety to perennial beds when there's too much green.

Have several phlox with variegated leaves.
Had 'Becky Towe' as long as 'Nora Leigh', but find 'Nora Leigh' to be much more vigorous and hence much more of a survivor.

Garden phlox in bottom right of picture above, and below, is new 'Glamour Girl' (coral pink).
Like the only other garden phlox in the garden, currently in bloom, it was bought and planted in mid May of this year.
