I thought about a tall grass plant of some kind, but worried about having to divide it in a few years, that is a chore I never care to repeat. Rolling my eyes. I'd like to plant something I can leave here 'forever' that won't need divided. Maybe evergreen? But I don't need that I guess, in the winter I'll bring the whole filter box indoors. South west MO zone 6. Any ideas? Must be fish safe of course.

Hmm, it does look like a grass of some sorts would work. Maybe a tall fern could work too. I don't know, though…I'm definitely no expert. A tree could ending up wrecking your pond with its roots or just general size, so a tree is probably out of the question.

A low growing Japanese Maple, Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Euonymous of a compact type. I am not up on evergreens currently available but they would work as well.
Chances are it might take a few shrubs. By using a few with contrasting colors and leaves would add interest. Any one of these would respond well to you pruning them to keep them the proper size.

Perhaps you could put nice stone around the waterfall. I think it definitely needs hiding. Best of luck.
