I have been hanging out at the orchid forum, because I grow phragmipedilums and such inside, but this drought really got a lot of my plants and I am sticking to succulents and desert plants from now on (some did survive but they are baked, and may come back next year). I have been busy for the past few weeks getting more creeping sedums and that is when I discovered Sempervivum. I now have about 11 kinds, and chosing places to put them in the garden. Most are Heufeulii though. I have 3 regular hens and chicks. I'm sure at one point I will show a picture or two. The only one I have ready in a picture is called "Red Zinger" and it is supposed to get to about 8" wide and turn dark red. This is it: more or less red and yellow, and maybe 4 inches wide. I have also some arachnoids-- which I like a lot. Although I love the red, (dosen't everyone?) I also love that blue color, and also would like some yellow/white. Oh well I will stop talking. This is immature Red Zinger.

Hi Katy, so nice to meet you, and a big Welcome!
How long have you had your 'Red Zinger'? When it adjusts it will be a gorgeous red color.
One of my daughters lived in Las Cruces for a while. She grew several different sempervivum, the most successful was a calcareum. She put them in bright filtered light under a deciduous tree. I look forward to seeing how yours do for you.

Thanks. I just got the Red Zinger last week. I got a shipment from Mountain Crest Gardens. But I have a few that I got before that.
I have the problem of having to get not only a hot weather succulent, but also one that can stand the winter, so I can't get the kind of succulent that people have in Florida. I will look up calcariums.

Welcome Katy! Arachnoid types attract me too. Anything with tufts, cilia, fuzz, etc seem to wink at me. I had these kinds of plants for several years and didn't realize that my collection of them did better in morning sun with a little bit of shade in the afternoon here in Salem OR. It was brutal for my semps when I lived in NM at altitude of 7000 ft. with little rainfall.

Here's a flat of arach types that I'm taking care of now

Thank you so much everyone for replying. I am having a lot of fun mixing up contrasting colors and such. Today, I picked up a very overgrown "Chocolate Kiss" from "Chick Charms" with about 10 pups already. I'll be planting that besides a "Lime Zinger." I was reading up and found that many of the Sedums of the "Sunsparkle" TM brand, and the Chick Charms are bred by the same guy, I believe named Hanson (is that Chris Hanson?). Anyway. The Chocolate Kiss will get fairly big and is a bit darker than Red Zinger. I also forgot that I had a previous Chick Charms sempervivum, "Butterscotch Baby." I really would like some chartreuse, or yellow types. That is for next year I guess. I want to make sure everything is in the ground and growing before winter.

Welcome! to NGA and to the forum, Katy! I apologize for not welcoming you sooner. On mobile, I can't 'watch' forums, so I don't get notified when a new thread is made.

I look forward to seeing your sempervivum collection grow. Red Zinger is stunning! I hope to see you around. The avid sempervivum growers on here are currently most active on this thread: The thread "Sempervivum Chat & Photos 2022" in Sempervivum forum.

Well, I am done with collecting for the year. I want to see some "action" before putting any new ones in because I have no idea how quickly they grow or if my ground is good for them. I also have put in several types of sedum and some other plants and I want to see them fill in some before buying any more plants.

Oops I lied. I found some no-ids but gorgeous and huge. Right now it's too late but Tuesday I may get a few more. As I was planting, I realized that I am considering going for the "coral reef" look that Laura Eubanks did on Youtube, but I can't do plants like euphorbias. I am much more limited in my plant choices. I still think I can do it, maybe not as "grand" as she has done, but nice nevertheless.
