This is going to be a pictorial with details dealing with how I repot macro bulbed Bulbophyllums. My victim is a division of Bulb. Tree Frog which is Bulb. bicolor x Bulb. macrobulbon.

I acquired the plant in shredded tree fern. It was a large 16 bulb plant with 8 new growths, 2 on this division.
I got a 5" plastic pot and added a layer of broken crock to the bottom. Then added 3/4" of media.

Then I carefully back filled pot with sphagnum moss. I put it in snuggly, not really cramming it in there. Remember, water has to flow through it.

From here it goes under a 2 tube light fixture, the leaves are about 5-6" below the bulbs.
I use this method for such plants as Bulbophyllum claptonense, lobbii, sumatranum, rothschildianum, Manchind, cruentum, Elizabeth Ann, etc.
This time of year these plants generally need water every 7-10 days, more often in winter. Lately humidity has been running 80-93%.

Will you look at this!!!? This is a fairly recent purchase and repot of mine.

This is a developing bud on Bulbophyllum claptonense! I still look at both Bulbophyllum claptonense and Bulbophyllum sumatranum as varieties of Bulbophyllum lobbii. Lobbii is a rather yellow to yellow gold flower measuring roughly 2" by 3 1/4 " high.
Claptonense is typically a more golden flower with varying amounts of brick red highlights. Most are either as a blush or in veining or striping in the flower segments

So for now I am anxiously waiting to see exactly what this species will look like. But a bud on a Bulbophyllum is so COOL!!!!

I lost this bud on Bulbophyllum claptonense that I posted above. I am disappointed. I can not say with certainty what happened.
It did elongate to more then twice the length of what you can see above. It suddenly color a good deal of yellow in the bud and dropped the next day. Try, try again.

I have more Bulbophyllum news. I did manage to get ahold of my third clone of Bulbophyllum Manchind. This is Bulbophyllum echinolabium x Bulbophyllum mandibulare. It reminds me of a compact version of Bulbophyllum Lindsey Paris. It is a sequential bloomer on shorter inflorescences. The first two clones are the burgundy variety. This new one is kind of an old gold color with burgundy or red burgundy veins. Lip is solid burgundy.
This is a good sized plant in a 6" pot. I am hopeful of future divisions. The other 2 are producing very large new growths in 3 1/2" pots. I am excited about that!
