And sometimes even if you try to colour coordinate----the plants don't give the colour that
you thought they would. And it is fun to go out in the garden, and find a new flower in a new colour.

Good point, Karen, and thanks for the reminder. Things do happen, and when you only have one... it's especially better to be safe than sorry. I'll get something ready for it.

It's a stunningly pretty orange; very clear and bright. It'll likely give a needed splash of color in that bed long after the phlox has finished.
I'll chuckle about the differences between my expectations and the reality every time I look at it, too, so even though it's a hot color it'll still be a stress reliever.
It'll grow on you...maybe you'll like it! I think it's pretty!
I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority. E. B.White

Either that, or employ a big clear plastic tub. That's what I did with mine. Brought the tub in when it was too cold and/or nasty -then set it out with the top off or wedged open during warmer periods. Even when fully open those clear tubs entrap enough heat and block enough cool drafts to be extremely handy.
These Tithonia plants were started from seed at the same time. I had many more but these were the only two that survived the cold snap the week I had to be gone. They are almost side by side yet one survived very well, and the other one had no leaves at all left and looked dead, but is making a come back.
I just started using small plastic tubs: 1gal. + 1pt. ice cream containers. Two small 6 cell plastic containers fit right in. At this time of year I really don't need it for cold protection, just from hard rains, squirrels, voles and such. I did manage to sprout seeds in them, that does not mean it is a good or bad method, just a workable method. So far mostly just Zinnia seeds is all I have tried.
