Am I the first one who received the first peony root of the season? This is Flying Pink Saucer from Oh My Peonies! Very good quality root.

Great root Anya! I think my first roots will be from Hollingsworth or Lyndaker.

Hollingsworth came Sept 21 last year.

That looks to be a great root to start off the thread, Anya. It's hard to believe it is root time already. Planting for the future!

Wow, it's still so hot here in CO I'd really not even realized that planting season has started but I routinely got boxes from mid Sept on when gardening here! Hoping I'll not get any boxes in AL until the 2nd week of Oct. Did you get many new ones this year, Anya?
I did get a box of spider lily bulbs in over the weekend, darned Jake from Wholesale for the Small Scale Gardener got me in a weak moment. Read they can be kept in a warm, shady spot for planting later so that's what I'll try.

Liz, I cold not stop ordering! One new peony is in the ground (Oh My Peonies are exceptionally early, I really appreciate it!) and 11 more are coming. I got rid of 2 peonies (one did not do well and another was very similar to what I have) and re-arranged some peonies to make more space. The fall this year is still warm, I hope the soil will stay warm for some time and not freeze before the roots arrive.

I sure hope so, Bea! I plan to go out every weekend in April again next year, hoping to have a lot more blooms! I definitely amped up on tree peonies and Itohs, not as many herbaceous as in prior years….I think I shared here though that I went insane and bought Elizabeth Black at convention auction. Paid more than I wanted to for it but not more than I was expecting. The guy who won Kim got hit a lot harder than I did, think that one was the most expensive purchase that night!

The Perennial Plant Society had a garden tour this morning, so I drove an hour to go see the garden. It was raining fairly steadily, and I got a bit wet. But there is a great garden center just down the road from the site of the tour, so I went there. They had so many potted peonies, herbaceous, Itohs, and woody.
I came home with two woody peonies. $85 each in a 5 gallon pot.
The first one I could not find on the internet.

The second one comes up as a soft yellow.

I will be planting them within the next couple of weeks. I'm going to wash the potting soil off so I can see the grafts and make sure they are buried deep enough.

These were really worth slogging around the garden center in the steady rain.
When I got home I found that everything was still dry, but we did get a few light showers this late afternoon.

Wonderful surprise finding woody peony varieties that you don't already have at a nursery—instant gratification! Congratulations!

Thanks Anya and Liz. They were tucked away at the back of one of their greenhouses. I assume to protect them from the sun. Glad I looked back there!

If you're washing off the roots before planting let us know how they look! That sized plant you could have significant woody roots rather than just the nurse root. If you do, will you remove the nurse root? I've never, the main ones I've seen in that state are from Nate and his are on stock that has never pushed a herbaceous stem for me….wouldn't know what to do!

I'll keep you posted. I will not remove any nurse root since it will need all resources to establish itself.

I have 2 tree peonies that were originally potted plants from a nursery here in CO, got them several years ago here in CO. I didn't remove the soil from the roots when I transplanted in CO, just planted deeper. Didn't expose the roots when I dug them up and moved them to AL, either! I don't know if one was planted already, so know the 2nd one is still sitting in a grow bag, waiting to be planted this fall. That one bloomed it's head off in the bag last spring. I think I'll try to plant it without exposing the roots this fall since it seems to be pretty happy…

The peregrina came as two roots, one smaller and one huge one.
These are from the CPS root exchange.
