Thread OP

I have this bush in my front yard that I LOATHE, I mean I absolutely hate this thing lol. However, my mom loves it and wants me to start cuttings off it and get them well established in her yard for her before I cut this thing down (no, she can't start them herself. The poor woman could kill a fake plant in a week if you gave it to her lol). So rather than take the year or longer to start cuttings, get them grown big enough to plant in her yard, and give them a good full growing season to establish themselves. I'd rather just figure out what this monstrosity of a plant is so hopefully I can just buy her a couple from a nursery and I can get rid of this eyesore sooner lol. I'm including several pictures so hopefully someone here can help me out because I'm not having any luck at all trying to figure it out myself lol. And yes, I know it looks funky shaped but the horses trim the side of it next to the fence and the picture of the whole bush is halfway through a SEVERE trim job I just gave it to get it away from the driveway (and if I'm lucky, shocked it so bad it'll die but I don't suspect I'll be fortunate enough for that lol) please help!

I would just love to have it in my yard. I plant things for their beauty and for the wildlife. My birds and animals would just love that crabapple!! It is a shame that you do not like it.
Planting things that are neat and tidy just isn't my goal.
Good luck.

I understand what you mean. Tbh I truly believe if it was located somewhere else in the yard, like on the edge of it, I wouldn't mind it so much. Where it's at right now it's in the middle of everything and the way it's positioned in relation to my front porch it blocks a good third or more of my view to the front horse pasture. If more wildlife actually ate the fruit it puts out that would be another reason I'd leave it but usually I'll only ever see a few sparrows occasionally picking at them. I'm usually the same about planting things that benefit the local wildlife and do have several plants in the yard that put out fruit for the them or at least are beneficial to the local pollinators. This one is just poorly located and messy for where it's at. I haven't decided what will be replacing it yet but the good thing is that I have plenty of other food providing plants (that everything around here seems to prefer anyway) that this one bush going away isn't going to bother the animals much at all.

Hi & welcome! Do the fruits have seeds in them? If so, maybe some will grow. 2 thumbs for showing such concern for your mom.

No, I understand but I have no idea where you are. And believe it or not, here, a half hour west of Detroit, I have about 15 species after my berry plants.
Carolina Wren, House Wren, Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Cedar Waxwing, Cardinal, Swainsons Thrush and others eating these berries.
I don't see them every day by any means but I can definitely see that berries are missing.
I planted three crab apples myself two years ago and during this time of year, the House Finch are in those all the time. But as with everything, we all make our own choices to meet our needs.
