Can I use wood saw dust & sand to root my angel trumpet plant cutting ?? Thanks Jack

OK---Thanks--What Im doing is grinding up my pine cones that fall in my back yard, get rid of them, and gives me some much.

OK...Now I have a few cutting that the bark got pull off.. Will the buds still grow-- or just on the bark, when I put the cutting in water ???? Thanks

ReconJack, the best way to start a Brugmansia is in a pot with dirt. The sooner they get into dirt, the best plant one can have. On Pinterest we found a pop bottle way of starting plants, the clear plastic gives you the chance to watch the roots grow. We have this way on our blog. Google karmahappytoes garden.

Just to show how easy these thangs root, i took a 8'' stem i pruned an stuck it in the ground, just plain old sand, no root tone. Nuttin. just stuck it in an watered it. Now watch....it'll make a liar outa me.

Oh, to live in Florida........where it should root well and one can leave them in the ground.

In My Experience They Root Very Fast And Very Good In Plain Tap Water Just Change It 1-2 Times A Week. Soon As They Start To Grow Roots I Pot Them Up Till Time To Plant In Ground. The Ones In My Pic I Rooted In Water Bout 5 Weeks Ago And Put In Pots Bout 3 Weeks Ago. So There Is 3 Weeks Seperating The Two Pics.

I Rooted This One In Water 3 years Ago This Year It Had 92 Blooms All Open At One Time.

Duane, hey "neighbor!" That's fantastic! I do similar but leave them in water all winter, plop in the ground in the spring.

Well I got a few of my cutting in sand & mulch for the winter, plus a got just a few under lights. Yep they grow like crazy in sand & mulch , plus lake water----well Take care--Jack

Here are my cuttings. All three are in water near a south facing basement window with additional grow lights. They are growing well but at this rate I may need to put them at floor level.

I've put a few of mine in darker spots since the foliage @ this time of year is so sparse. The foliage that does grow seems to conjure spider mites out of thin air so I'm seeing how some do w/o enough light to grow any foliage. If that works as well, I would be able to do a LOT more cuttings. I have plenty of dark corners.

That's right Tiffany. Spider mites love my plants too. ☹️. However, I haven't encountered a spider mite issue so far. The basements stays cool and with a higher humidity level. I can't say the same for my Alocasia plants in my house. I try to spray them with a neem oil mix on regular basis, every two weeks or so. And still…those little spider mites invade my plants. 🤬 the struggle is real.

My 3 smallest Brug props this year are here, hiding in an industrial storage space. All 3 had spider mites and lost all of their leaves about 6 weeks ago. I moved them away from the other plants, but they seem to have recovered. SM's don't do well outside here during the summer so as long as the roots and trunks are healthy still by spring, I'll cut off the tips anyway when I put these in the ground.

This one is in my house. I need to move it to a jug with a wider opening as soon as I use up my laundry soap again.
