Thread OP

They would've rooted fine in soil or water of course, but soil's been talking a while and I'm a follower of water roots having to convert into soil roots and that takes a while too.

This seems like a good middle ground. Closer look tomorrow but it'll be 3 weeks this Sunday that I drilled the holes and prepped it.

While I'm thinking about it, do you think they're closer to soil roots or water roots, or that they're all the same? They're on top of loose moss with a few extra wads tucked over the nodes. Misted every 3 days or so, about 18" under strong LED lights.

Thanks!

Great!

Soil roots, water roots.. does it really matter which these are? It worked. I think soil, as they attached to something and are not submerged in water.

Pandemic benefit- more carryout food comes in mini greenhouses. Hilarious!
Plant it and they will come.

Its exclusively what I use to germinate and grow Anthurium seedlings in compots. Once they get good root systems they get transferred to independent cells in seed shorting trays. Then into 2" solo cups with slits in the bottom, then 4 inch clear plastic wine cups with either soil mix or moss. Large cuttings or well rooted cuttings/plants get the big gulp Wawa, McCrack or Starbucks cups. There are people in the aroid community (mainly Facebook) already trying to make a buck on clear plastic planters that they buy wholesale and resell to people on Facebook at a profit. Ne need for that. The big size Wawa cup is all you need. I have no need for a close system for my stuff. I have adequate humidity either in the greenhouse or indoors in the terrariums.

Yes these are considered soil roots. They function the same way. Some people use what they refer to as 'Dirty Moss' which is moss with some perlite and a little bit of potting mix worked through it

Thanks!
To me it does matter because I treat them differently at first:)

Yes soil vs water roots does matter. Soil roots take off a lot faster. They are tougher because of having had to wade through some actual physical media. Water roots have just been swimming. Not engaging with anything. They are a lot weaker and take longer to get to adjust once transplanted

I would love to see pics of a (same) plant with water roots next to soil roots. I've never noticed any difference when repotting or digging up plants that were put in the ground for summer, vs. the roots on cuttings started in water.

There's an experiment. Thumbs up any results of which may be hard to defend because of so many variables between plants. Such as coleus will root and grow incredibly easily any old way.

I think it's time to get my piece of Raphidophora out, see if anything is starting, and make it a home in a tall clear cup. Just love when you see a first root inside the cup.
Plant it and they will come.

I could do this experiment with at least 100 different plants, water vs. soil. But will have to wait for "outside season" to come back around. I can't include a moss group, never rooted anything that way, but could compare the basic thing that is always discussed, soil vs. water.

There are a lot of things I usually do one way and not the other, but that's because my own past experience has led me to those preferences, per plant, but not because I consider one method is always superior to the other, for everything. It's hard to isolate just that variable if not trying more than 1 method at the same time. Otherwise, various variables like temp, day length, health of stock, unseen/unknown pathogens, humidity, etc... can cause variations in the results that may not be the product of the method.

Outstanding! Is it Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) in the 1st pic?

Do you think this might work for roses? I have trouble getting them to root in soil due to rot/fungus.
