Hi
Are there any disadvantages to splitting a Vanda in January compared to waiting until, say March, when it starts to get warmer? I'm just keen to get it done now.

Evesham,
I don't grow many Vanda plants , but one of the worlds experts lives here in Florida.. Dr. Motes says that any pruning should be finished up by July ( I believe.) So if this were my plant, I would wait until the spring.

I agree.
Looking at your plant, perhaps it is the angle, is it indeed a Vanda?

Just more wondering, are we looking at an Orchid here? Smiling

Hi Ursula. I believe it is a Vanda orchid. Would be great if anyone can provide further clarification.

Bryan, is it possible please to take some pics from a different angle?
Vandaceous Orchids grow monopodial, meaning they have leaves coming off a central stem to each side. I don't see that here in your pic.
Some Vanda pics here

Based on Bryan's photo, I'm wondering if we might be looking at some kind of Bromeliad instead of an orchid?

That is what we were thinking too.

Does this help identify the plant?
Whatever it is, could responders give me an opinion on my original question : Are there any disadvantages to splitting a Vanda in January compared to waiting until, say March, when it starts to get warmer? I'm just keen to get it done now.

Hi Bryan,

Unfortunately that's the same photo as the one at the start of the thread and still a very small image. I'm afraid it doesn't aid further identification.

As to whether you could divide a Vanda now, I cannot say - I do not grow the genus. But I don't think your plant is a Vanda, so I would not be acting based on the assumption that it is.

Bryan, that is not a Vanda.
But if it were a Vanda, March would be the time to divide it.
Australis...isn't this a Cymbidum?

Thanks Bryan. As Lindsey says, it's definitely not a Vanda. It's not a Cymbidium either and I'm still thinking Bromeliad. I can see what looks like a flower stalk from the centre of a growth:

Bryan, aside from your non-vandaceous plant in question here -
just to answer your question regarding the division of Vandas, I myself wouldn't attempt dividing a Vanda right now. ( zone 6b )
I would have to google your location and knowing where you grow your plants - inside in a temperate zone during the Winter or outside in tropical temps. In any case one might remove mature divisions when the plant is in active growth.

I just snapped a couple quick pics of one of my plants..

Hopefully we might see some blooms on the mystery plant and things become clear.

Seems like the tag in the orchid has the letters "Milt" in the first word. Maybe grasping here. I tried growing pansy orchid but they never rebloomed after purchase and I have grown tons of orchids successfully.

Miltoniopsis Hajime Ono 'Raspberry' . Is that your post/photo and tag?
