Get Rid of the Ants in Your Containers

A large part of my garden is in containers, so I am constantly battling ants that would like to take up residence. Here is how I get rid of them. When I find a pot crawling with ants, I sprinkle a little granular insecticide on the ground and a little on the surface of the soil in the pots, then water. Ants will vacate the premises in about 48 hours. I've also started sprinkling a little granular insecticide when I set out pots on the ground in the spring before the ants even have a chance to build a new home. It usually keeps the pots ant free for 2 months or so. This also works well for plants I keep in the greenhouse with saucers under them.

My maximum plants are in containers and facing the same problem especially in summers. There are earthworms in the containers, if i sprinkle a little granular insecticide then these earth worm may die. How can I save these earthworms from insecticide because earthworms are helpful for plants.

If your plants can tolerate having their roots in extremely wet conditions for a few days, you can super saturate the soil with water - you'll have to do it probably twice a day for a few days, and they will leave. That's how I get rid of ants that have made a colony in a bag of potting soil .. I just water the heck out of the soil in the bag keep it super wet for a few days.

The earthworms might drown, or crawl away.

Sprinkle a generous coat of cinnamon on top of the soil. Ants hate cinnamon, and it shouldn't harm the worms.

I use cinnamon for seedlings to help with damping off but it's too expensive to be sprinkling it on the ground in the quantities that would be needed to be effective.

I bought a one pound box of ground cinnamon for three dollars, not bad. A big discount grocery store. They had four pound boxes for $11... Just around the stems of plants will do.
