Thread OP

These are in the park I go to and was wondering what is the name of this bush. Would love to grow in my backyard. Anyone that knows, can I propagate or grow from seeds. It's winter and the leaves are gone but it looks like there are seeds at the end of the branches. Any idea? Thanks

Could you include a picture of it now showing the seeds you describe?

Hi psklouky:

Funny you should ask about that big old Viburnum x burkwoodii cluster at the Iroquois Amphitheater parking lot in Iroquois Park in Louisville KY...

I planted those - along with the rest of the older landscape in front of the amphitheater - back in 2006. Glad to hear that you enjoy them; they are kicking pretty good for their age and exposure.

Burkwood Viburnum is pretty easy to grow from semi-hardwood cuttings, usually taken as new growth starts to firm up in June/July. You can grow them from seed as well, but they often take two years to germinate. You should be able to easily find information about this process online.

Here are some images from when those plants (and others) first were going into the ground. Let me know if there are any other plants you are interested around Louisville's parks, as I probably have had my hands on them sometime in the last 25 years.

Memories...

I answered this query the morning that I left for a blessed two week vacation. Now back and refreshed, I'm glad that psklouky is enjoying one of Louisville's excellent legacy Olmsted parks. Don't take it for granted; there are many who wish to ransack its resources for their own singular pursuits.

It IS a great place for a quiet peaceful woodland walk. Let's hope future generations will be able to enjoy it similarly.

@porkpal: it is always rewarding when others appreciate the work you've done. I think it's why I've continued in this career in Louisville Metro for lo these many years. Liking plants doesn't hurt.
