This was taken in the Arid Greenhouse at Chicago Botanic Garden. It's actually the back of an armadillo-shaped mass planting.

Here's the original image of the fat armadillo, his snout wasn't fully covered.

And in case anyone was wondering what the small sign said, when resizing for the forums it was near unreadable.

Great banner. I find the sign interesting, since there doesn't seem to be any S. arachnoidium type semps.

I don't know how hard shapes like these are to create or maintain, but they sure are fun to see. This armadillo shape is a first for me. Love it!

If I lived someplace warm year round where I could leave it outside, I'd definitely give it a try, they look like fun. I just wouldn't have the space to bring anything that big inside and have it be near a window. I did some digging and found these interesting sites though:

You can buy ready-made forms filled with moss here:

Nessie was my favorite (but ouch! the price!), and that got me wondering if you couldn't shape your own out of chicken wire maybe and fill it with the spaghnum moss? I've got a Nessie-type banner in queue for someday from a park that looks like they could have ordered from here. And the turtle on Page 4 has me rethinking "do I have room?"

Nancy, sempervivum are alpine type plants, and should be quite happy outdoors where you live. Smiling

I know it says hard to Zone 3 and in the ground I've no doubt. But do you really think they'd live through our winters stuck into moss where the cold air can circulate all around? I just might have to think about it trying it on a small one...

I think the key would be to keep them from being covered with snow. The sunny side or end of a covered porch is where I would put those. I've always thought they look cute in a strawberry pot.

Me too! I have 2 broken pots. I think it also shows so well how little soil those plants need.
