They're more a clump of fat roots rather than a true bulb (but they are in the Amaryllis family), so they're typically sold as potted plants. They should be hardy in your area, and a good landscape plant.

Thanks Neal!

I was trying to see online who is selling them and how much..what a roller coaster of prices..so it seems to get a blooming size have to consider the number of leaves. So how fast does this plant typically produce its leaves in one growing season?

Clivia are evergreen, so while they'll lose a few old leaves each year, they keep plenty of foliage year round. I'd estimate mine grows at least 6 new leaves each year, and it's a pretty big one.

That is good to know! Okay one more question..so typically how long does the blooms last? Just want to have an idea. I like that the leaves are evergreen..that will be good in itself if I keep it indoors.

I saw online a variegated leaf variety! Sure looks awesome...but price is too awesome for me though.. Blinking

They bloom in spring when its still cool, so that helps with the longevity of the blooms. If I recall correctly, seems mine bloomed for about 3 weeks. It had 3 bloom stalks this year (it has only produced 1 each year in the past), and they opened in succession, so it may have gone a little longer than that. Keep in mind if you grow it indoors, they need to be cool in winter, and kept on the dry side, in order to bloom. Once I see the bud emerging, looking strange the way it appears smashed between leaves, that's when I start giving it more water.

The variegated ones are gorgeous, but like you, the price has kept me from trying one. They're said to grow much slower than green leaved varieties. Definitely a good idea to start with a less expensive variety to see how it performs for you.

Here is what mine looked like in bloom this year. It bloomed later than usual, and just when I'd given up hope, 3 buds emerged! I found this one at a Lowes store on a clearance wrack for $5, but I've never seen any there again. You may find more in your area available as landscaping plants, so keep your eye open for bargains at box stores.

Thanks! I've never detected any scent, and I'm sure I stuck my nose in it, as I can't see a flower without sticking my nose in it, LOL.

Tarev, mine bloom sporadically throughout the year here, depending on weather. They are cool season bloomers, and definately need shade. The leaves burn easily in sun, but can take a little early or very late. I would send you a couple of my seedlings, but the 1gal. pots would be heavy enough that it wouldn't be worth the postage. I don't know how they would fare bare root since they don't go dormant. If you can't find any for a reasonable price, or find a neighbor willing to share, send me a tree-mail.

Yey! I got my Clivia! So thankful the nursery on the city next to ours has it. I was thinking to keep it in its current container and just put it all inside a bigger container after spring. I am hesitant to disturb the roots now.

The tall clay container to the right of the photo is where I intend to put it later. I think I will just put some empty containers or bottles underneath so it is not too deep for the plant.

I fill the bottom half of large containers with those styrofoam peanuts some ecologically unaware nurseries still insist on using as packaging material.

I think I just made my first booboo on my clivia..poor leaves..looked like leaf got wrinkled by our cold last night, we dipped into 39F maybe since the plant was in the rain at the nursery a few days back, and media is still damp.
Thumb of 2014-11-24/tarev/5e4170 Thumb of 2014-11-24/tarev/4b7c5a

center part still looks okay thankfully...and the leaves just have old watermarks..
Thumb of 2014-11-24/tarev/5b3743

I think I will have to make that soil more porous..and move it to other container later to dry out.

I changed my plans on this clivia. Decided to repot to another container with no tapered bottom so less likely to be blown over in case of strong winds here.

So this is the spot I will put it, by our front door, there is an overhang so if it rains, it will not be drenched. North facing area too, so just right for its shady needs, but container has to be changed.
Thumb of 2014-11-25/tarev/69c0dc

Took me awhile to unpot this one..too rootbound, so had to destroy the plastic container..anyways, don't need it. Those roots do remind me of very fat noodles. Big Grin
Thumb of 2014-11-25/tarev/8eda42Thumb of 2014-11-25/tarev/7ec8e1

Repot done, back by the front door. Good luck Clivia, hope it does not mind the root disturbance so much. So now I can leave it alone and do not have to move it back and forth in case it rains..plus it is heavy.
Thumb of 2014-11-25/tarev/196f56 Thumb of 2014-11-25/tarev/8bcd02

Temps feels spring-like right now at 60F..but it goes down to 39F to low 50's every night. So that should be good for the cold treatment aspect. I tried our garage first last night & it only goes down to 60F, not enough. So this front door spot would work much better, open yet protected by the overhang.

Thanks Carol! It seems this Fall and incoming Winter has more rains than last year. How is it there in SoCal right now??
