I've grown heucheras for almost 20 years, and began adding heucherellas within the past 3-4 years. I've seen how foliage color is at its best in the spring but I've never seen anything like this before! Below is the cultivar I bought as H. 'Gold Zebra' last summer. At the time it had the vivid red veins and coloration just like the pictures I've seen of it. But when the new foliage came in this spring, it was solid gold at first!! I thought, "good grief, has this reverted?" I couldn't figure out what had happened because I KNEW it had red veins last year. Now it is slowly beginning to get some color, but it still isn't as bright as it was last season or as I've seen in the pictures. Do the leaves on this cultivar typically show more color as the season progresses? Hope that someone else grows this and can help.
Here's how it looks today. It gets at least half shade where it is planted. What is going on?

I have never had that one come back for me, But if it grows like Alabama Sunrise the red will increase as the season progresses

Thanks for the information, Bob. I'll monitor this over the next few weeks and months and see if the color darkens. I'll bet it behaves like Alabama Sunrise.

Yes. The color and veining increase as the weather warms.
