Thread OP

I was thinking about taking some samples to Rutgers in the Spring. Has anyone done this?

I am not allowed to post a link to the site at this time but will when I am.

I'm in Wisconsin and sent mine in to the UW Soil services. There's a small fee and it usually can take 4-6 weeks in a busy season, but it will give you a window of information on what your soils health is. You can get a probe usually for a returnable rental fee from your county extension office to aid in your sample. And also you need to pull a few samples from around the same garden.

My report was emailed to me and I was told if I had any questions to contact them or my local ag agent. Most was fairly explanatory for what was needed for amendments. I seem to recall they have a basic testing and then additional testing for things like sulphur or others. Each state or region has their own issues of things they test for so this will probably differ. But as you add things to the basic test your fee does increase.

Good luck!

I have never had my soil tested.

Good feedback on your experience, @ScarletTricycle

Thanks!

I forgot to say, my experience here is if you are pulling from multiple gardens you may have multiple fees and separate ziplocs of soil to send in. And of course you'll be charged for the postage to ship as I don't think most do walk-ins. They also ask you in the form to indicate what you plan to have in this area to help guide you on the best guide for remedy.

This is the form for UW:

If you are unsure who or what can test for you reach out to your County Ag agent (usually located at your county courthouse) for information - they will have who to contact, a form, probe etc.
