A Drought-Tolerant Garden

By SongofJoy

The year 2011 was a violent weather year in the US, with at least 12 weather-related disasters exceeding a billion dollars in damage. Some say it was Earth's most extreme weather year since 1816. Much of the country suffered from record heat and drought . . . and so did the yards and gardens.

After seeing the first show of the UK based Gardener's World, this article is more timely than ever. The 2023 kickoff show featured examples of plants that did not do well (amazingly featured in full color) in the temperature extremes (drought and low temperatures) over the 2022-2023 season of the usually temperate, lush UK. The show also showed which plants seemed to be adapting and surviving the extremes, with a "watch and wait" mentality (let's see how it recovers) that I found helpful.

This is a way of saying that I will be checking the zone ranges and commentary on many of the plants in this list. SE Michigan has become warmer, and heat and floods and drought may be a thing for each planning season for which plants to plant and grow.

Thanks again for the article, as relevant as ever,

~ Deb
