After seeing the orchid show at Ft Worth botanical, my DH purchased these two orchids for me for our anniversary; but they do not have names. What are they? They do have a slight fragrance.

First one is a Zygo Alliance hybrid and might be possible to pin down more precisely.

The second is an Oncidium Alliance hybrid (best guess is something that was formerly a Wilsonara). Might be a bit more challenging to get an exact ID.

I image-googled Zygopetalum hybrids and I thought Zygopetalum Jumpin Jack looks similar. But - checking our database, no, not a match.

Our OCE took a look! Thanks Bill! Thumbs up

The Oncidium hybrid might be Oncostele Wildcat 'Bobcat' or a hybrid there of. There is a least one other "red clone" of Wildcat whose name escapes me at the moment.
As far as the Zygo goes, I am leaning towards Zygopabstia. I can not find a close enough match.
Both orchids are demanding of cooler temperatures and loads of water. Dappled sunlight is best.
If these are put outside in Texas weather, they will probably die due to Texas warmth. The Zygo grows cooler than the Oncostele. 58-75 is the preferred temperature range for Bobcat. If grown too warm, the plant will go steadily downhill.
The Zygo grows best at 52-72.

Thanks all for helping out here.
Great, both need cooler temps which we don't have much...
Now why would Trader Joe have these to tempt me! Well, I guess I know the answer but it is still so wrong Sad
I'll try to keep them alive, which will be hard, since I'm only have phal experience and only for a few years.
Since I don't know when it was last watered, should I poke finger into the medium? Tell me what to do now.

Definitely - I would poke the medium to see if it needs water.

The media seems damp.
More water?

More water? No, I don't think so.
I would just trim the yellow leaves.
I myself never grow any Orchids in double pots, so I can't really say anything on that. Smiling

Anyone else?

And happily there is BigBill, here is his comment!

Keeping inside of a cache pot without drainage holes can effect the normal drying rate of the media. Oncidiums like to be watered maybe every three days, then dry quickly, then watered again! That cache pot throws the wet dry cycle out of whack!!
Media seems a bit too coarse. Seedling bark/charcoal/perlite is best. As small of a pot as possible.
Minor shriveling of the big pseudobulb tells you that it is not getting quite enough water.
How about light? 1-2 hours of morning sun is a good idea.
Oncidiums do not hold on to those smaller side leaves or leafy bracts for very long. New pseudobulbs typically hold leaves 12-18 months. That is normal. They never get to become large leafy/lush plants. They just don't do that.
They have very fine, water loving roots, that dry out quickly. They hate to sit damp or too wet.

There you have it!
Thanks Bill! Smiling

Thanks Bill and Ursula.
I will take it out of the cache and find better media for it. I have perlite but not the other two.

Here's a photo of the 4 in. pot it's in.

The good news is that a new leaf has been growing.
