In a week we will be leaving our Texas home and going back to Wisconsin. We will return to Texas in early November. I planted these alocasia last November when we got here, so they have 6 months growth. Well, all except that really tall one in each photo. Would you cut the leaves off like you would when digging them up in the fall to store the bulbs, or leave them "as is"? My concern is it gets pretty hot here in the summer with 100 degree days and not a lot of rain, so didn't know if I left all the foliage like it is now if it would be too much for the plant to deal with as opposed to starting over with new growth.

What do you suggest?

That's a tough one. If you 'hurricane cut' the leaves, they will just grow back after you leave. Can you pay a neighbor kid to come water during summer until it cools off in fall?

I wouldn't cut them back, like Gina said going to come right back anyway. I'm guessing no irrigation, but do notice gutter downspouts for when it does rain. They might get a bit distressed in excessive heat, but you can trim off dead leaves when you come back in the fall. Gina has a good suggestion of getting someone to give them water during the dry spells.

We shut the water off when we leave so they are on their own. No kids as this is a 55 and over park. Most leave for the summer.

I guess I will leave them as is and see what they do over the summer.

They may surprise you. Plants that grow from bulbs and tubers can be pretty drought tolerant. Even if they go down maybe only into dormancy?
