I first saw photographs of English Bluebells [Hyacinthoides non-scripta] naturalized in the shade of a grove of trees in the 1970's. Those few photos were all I had to appreciate them by - until, years later, the internet introduced me to lots more photos and reliable cultural information. I was very disappointed to learn they would not grow well in central Oklahoma. I was warned by several reputable sources they would not grow well in clay soils - and central Oklahoma is literally riddled with heavy clay. [Please comment if you have had favorable results in clay soils.] Here are a few photos of English Bluebells to whet your appetite:

But then I read about Spanish Bluebells and realized they might perform well in my area. The result? A lot of them were planted in central Oklahoma gardens and they did do well. Once again photos tell the story:

My only regret: I've never had a grove of trees in which to naturalize large quantities of them.
