Thread OP

Hello everyone. Excited to join this knowledgeable group and learn from you all.

I am working to landscape my backyard after a pool installation and need to create a privacy "wall" along my fence line with my neighbors. I live in Central Texas (Georgetown) and my local tree retailer suggested Arborvitae Emerald Green trees for this privacy. In my research, it seems 50/50 that they will do well in Central Texas (USDA Zone 8). Some say they won't handle the heat/humidity during the summer, but some say, once established, they will do well.

Does anyone have any experience with this tree growing well, or not, in Central Texas? Thanks!

Not in Georgetown, you live basically on the Caprock (lots of limestone) We have several folks in your area, but what nursery did you say advised you? By the way, your humidity is almost negligible to mine... let me see, live 25 yrs, like an alkaline soil (ph 7.0 prob or 8.0) need 6 hrs full sunlight minimum...are you in anywhere protected from winds? Such as a city neighborhood? or will this be an open area? It SOUNDS as if they told you true... Welcome! my memory of that area is a lot drier such as down closer to New Braunfels more than the Georgetown area...

@Grammachar are you near here? @Bubbles ?
So many roads to take, choices to make, and laughs to share!

I think it might do well. Most of the land on the east side of I-35 in the Austin area is good farmland with deep soil. It's the hill country and land west of the Balcones Fault that has shallow soil with lots of limestone. Huge difference in how easy it is to grow things. Do those get bagworms, I wonder? Some evergreens like that are really prone to attracting them. I ask the nursery if they knew of an established planting in your area where they were growing that you could check out.
