Hello everyone. I find the bigger, older cultivars, and the name changing confusing. Radiatum? Selloum?

If it has a trunk, especially with 'eyes' from old leaf scars, it's selloum or another similar Thaumatophyllum.
If it climbs without a trunk it's a Philodendron, not a Thaumatophyllum

Thanks Gina. I asked the seller! I like the plant. I have a small radiatum. I have a hope. I have tortum, elegans, mayoi, lacerum, xanadu deja vu & winterborn...none are whatever that is! Thanks again

Thaumatophyllum...it has a 4 inch visible trunk with 'eyes'! Which is harder to find?

Beautiful. Good thing you live where they can be happy outdoors. They seem to be quite the space occupying house plant.

The name Thaumatophyllum was conjured very recently. Before that, the name was Philodendron. This plant retains Philodendron as a synonym.

Tiffany, the name Thautomatophyllum was not 'conjured very recently'. It was created in 1859 (134 years ago) with a single species, T. spruceanum (aka Philodendron goeldii).

It has always been an aroid genus.

Philodendron has always been a genus on its own and had 3 subgenera: Meconostigma, Pteromischum, and Philodendron. Philodendron also having several subgenera on its own.

In 2018 based on genetic testing and other evidence several plants were determined to be different enough from Philodendron to move into a new genus. The sub genus Meconostigma was elevated to an actual GENUS, and these plants were placed into genus up from the species Thaumatophyllum (from Philodendron)... new genus.

One of those plants is the one that this thread is about.

Gina I've been anticipating your response all day Smiling I love your knowledge and that you say exactly what you think. Even if sometimes it may be that I'm disrespecting my plants roots. Lol

Thank you very much, Gina. : ) I'm aware that the name changing is in regard to DNA testing, a plan with which I do not agree. But that's beside the point.

I had never heard of the name before until it was attached to P. bipinnatifidum. My bad for assuming it was one of the new names that have been conjured for many other plants. Appreciate the correction, I'm going to keep calling it Philodendron.

The world won't stop spinning if you don't think plants deserve to be transferred into new genera based on DNA testing. Or if you keep calling a plant by an outdated, albeit synonymous, name.

For anyone who is interested in calling plants by their correct names, these are the 21 aroids that have been either assigned, or reassigned, to the genus Thaumatophyllum:
T. Adamantinum
T. Bipinnatifidum
T. Brasiliense
T, corcovadense
T. Dardanianum
T. Leal-costae
T. Lundii
T. Mello-barretoanum
T. Paludicola
T. Petraeum
T. Saxicola
T. Speciosum
T. Spruceanum
T. Stenolobum
T. Tweedianum
T. Uliginosum
T. Undulatum
T. Venezuelense
T. Williamsii
T. Xanadu

Thank you Gina. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I'm brand new, 3yrs(still have hundreds of aroids though)of collecting and self taught. I have questions you may be able to answer. So I have purchased several philodendron xanadu, I now know they are thaumatophyllum, or is that not the case for all of them? I have a deja vu, a winterbourn, and I sadly killed a golden xanadu cutting. My next question is I just bought a cutting of a philodendron glanduliferum but I can't seem to find any information on the ssp other than a nursery in Hawaii that sells them. Then I need a fact check! So my friend got a Philodendron corsonianum, and she says it's the oldest known philodendron hybrid from the late 1800's verrucous x pinnatifidum. It's awesome if it's accurate. Lastly I really want three philodendron that are not only pricey but seem to be extremely hard to find and I'm not sure why....well I'm unsure why two are. A distantilobum and a green warscewiczii. My number one wishlist plant that I can't find anywhere and would love to know more about if you have info is a philodendron brevispathum! If anyone is reading any of this that has a chronic illness...buy a plant Smiling

That is accurate. I'm 35 on methotrexate, plaquenil, provigil, cymbalta, topomax, adderall, and a few others for collagen vascular disease and plants became my saving grace after my whole life was turned upside down. There are published studies in medical journals about the benefits plants bring to your health. It's not bs. I may have gone overboard but that is because I found something I love that makes me happy.

Thank you. Is it okay that I'm potting the "nesty" philos like any others? I'm not exactly sure how they grow.
