Thanks for ideas on how this might be done with different vining plants.
I had heard of this, ---but did not know how it would be done or with which plants.
This is an excellent way to have a "living mulch".
I seed watermelon in among the tomatoe plants in containers.
We are too cold here and too short a season,---- to get fruit, but the vines are pretty
and keep moisture around the tomatoes and weeds from sprouting.

This is a great article and something I am doing this year. I am not a fan of lawns. I keep the bare minimum amount of lawn for my son to play but apart from that, I am going to have a large pumpkin patch cover one area and everywhere else, I am going to let Virginia Creeper cover up all the grass I no longer want.
Love the article and well written! I like sweet potato vine to help shade some of my plants in the hot summer. I have a lot of dappled shade, so just an hour or two of hot Texas sun can kill some of my ferns ...)
Someone also gave me the idea to put pumpkins(bought, not grown) in the vine to look like a seasonal pumpkin patch.
Glad you both liked the article.
Benny, the only reason I have lawn is because I don't think I could keep up if the entire yard was a huge garden.
Anna, that's a really cute idea! Have any pictures?
Great article! I recently started looking into vines for cover in my containers. I've become a huge fan of the dichondras since the keep their color even with their low water requirement.
