American (patriotic) peony lovers should be aware that Veseys (https://www.veseys.com/ca/flow...) a Canadian mail order retailer, are selling in their 2023 Fall Bulb Catalogue peony Miss America (white, award winning, heirloom peony) BUT calling is Miss CANADA (pink, 2022 intro., no awards) Grumbling (where is the angry exploding head emoji? Rolling on the floor laughing ) I suspect frankrichards16 and Meiko2, amongst many others, might be rather upset to know that the Miss America in their garden is really Miss Canada D'Oh! And perhaps any Canadians who buy Veseys peony would be pretty angry to know that it is really Miss America Thumbs down
I'm sure many of us have seen a plant sold with a new name but expropriating the name of a much loved registered peony just to probably sell more plants in Canada is - - - offensive comes to mind. I for sure will be contacting Veseys [email protected] about this.

Sighing! seriously? If you ordered Mother's Choice from a mail order catalogue and it turns out you received - after a couple of years waiting for it to bloom - Red Charm, you would shrug and put it down to 'that's marketing'? D'Oh! I'm tempted to ask if you would return the peony but I actually know many many people who just don't.
You can guess that I am one of the apparently few that return incorrect plants!

Valerie, does Vesey grow their own peonies?

I've learned not to buy from peony resellers.

They are a mail order garden plants/bulbs company so they don't grow anything Sighing!
I have bought from them before because they were inexpensive bulbs or something rare (of course it turned out not to be D'Oh! ) This is where I have a problem with people that don't return/complain about plants that are not what they ordered. The fault often lies with the wholesaler and if you don't complain the wholesaler will keep selling that wrong stuff to lots of other retailers, compounding the issue. But to actually appropriate a registered name and assign it to another registered plant - and they are even different colours - well, words fail me but fraud might be one of them.

Buying from an actual grower rather than a retailer is probably a good idea. We had a funny incident here with box store roots.
The packages were offered in August and labelled as Coral Charm.
I had picked up one and then decided they were a good price and went back to get another one. The rack was empty! So I went to another of the same store…….rack is empty!
Fine I planted it, and it bloomed one flower the following spring.
However,it certainly was not Coral Charm…..but likely Kansas?
Then I see one of the small plant sellers advertising potted Coral Charm peonies. I think I know who bought up all those roots!
But the joke is on them once those flowered.

D'Oh! I think the joke will be on the customers Caroline - except no joke. And you have proved my point - depending on how many thousands of roots were sold by that chain store there will be that many peony lovers who have the wrong plant Sad

well no kidding I was on facebook one day a woman posted a photo of what she called "Russian Lettuce" or something like that, and the commenters about lost their ever loving minds going full on hate on the lady saying she should be calling it 'Ukrainian Lettuce" Rolling my eyes. Apparently Russian Dressing is a no no, or Russian Sage in the garden, or how about eating Beef Stroganoff -is that a no no now? I guess if you adopted kids from Russia, maybe you should throw them away and start over w another country... nodding None of it made any sense. I was like well many things come from Russia and have that in their name, I don't think we have to rename everything or that we get cooties if we touch it. Rolling my eyes. I remember after 9/11 people doing stuff like this, Freedom Fries instead of French Fries and the like.....

Oh that is very interesting, Caroline!

I saw a post on Facebook where someone bought a Sarah Bernhardt in a pot for $49.99. It was not a nice full plant either. They could have bought 2 peonies from a reputable peony grower for that price!
