Very nice Mike. I gave the thread the name Poppies since it was untitled , if this is not what you wanted let me know.

Early this year I realized that I hadn't sown the poppy seeds I'd gotten...and I hadn't prepared a place for them. So I tossed a couple into some pots and prayed they'd get adequate chill. Two emerged today: a healthy, raucous red Pepperbox on a three-foot plant and a puny but determined Hungarian Blue.

The wild P. dubium are mostly finished; letting them go to seed now

Bob thanks. I thought that I had poppies 2023 in the title line. I should have proof read it before I posted it.
Zoë those are nice. Love the look of the wild one.

Thank you for the Acorn Mike. The P. dubium are crazy reseeders in uncultivated areas and start blooming in early spring. They are always a welcome sight

Enviable, Mike. Helen Elizabeth is a peaceful hue.

Baker's Florist Pepperbox turned out to be an assortment of red, various pink tones, and white. Next year I'll devote more space to them to better enjoy the diversity. Unfortunately, high winds plus high temps have made these very short-lived. Makes them more precious, I suppose.

Hey Mike, & all... Nice blooms !
I'd received some seeds by Mail Order. (BtW. The seeds of this plant shown, were Not sent from California !
)
I knew some were alpinum, which haven't flowerd as of quite yet.
Though a tiny plant, with orange colored blooms, (Improperly listed as being an orange flowering one, originating from near Syria.) has flowered first
It may possibly be the species californicum, Otherwise known by the Common Name of "Fire Poppy". Perhaps they tend to germinate better, afterwards of a wildfire, would be my guess.
Apparently not very readily available. (Due to limited wild habitat populations, perhaps ?)
The bloom is nearly the size of the little plant.

Shawn, despite your uncertainty about your sweet poppy's ID, thank you for the info about P. californicus. What an inspiring tale of Nature's will to persist!

Jacinth bloomed today. Both flowers are not their usual self most likely due to root competition from fall blooming Anemone

How very strange. I could imagine root competition affecting size and vitality, but not color.

One of my favorite flowers! Beauty of Livermere is the big red, the pink one is blooming for the first time but I don't recall what it is. Lauren's Grape is the annual and not sure of name for the last pale pink one.

Could be something in the soil that changed the color of the poppy. I transplanted some orange ones to a new garden bed where concrete had been before. They bloomed white, so I had the soil tested. Came back off the charts for phosphorus, and they recommended adding nitrogen. I did, and it worked. They were back to orange this year, and the plants were much sturdier, too.
