Just bought a really lovely blue star fern from a really good garden centre. Picked the best one in terms of foliage but still being a bit of a newbie didn't expect the soil of the plant properly. Really surprised to see this at the base. What is it? looks like some kind of cactus to me. What should I do?

Nah, a lot of people ask "what is this thing growing out of my fern?" Hi & welcome!

Asking a question because you don't know something is never stupid. The stupid don't realize they are lacking info and don't ask questions.

Working in nurseries for years, I've seen lots of examples of "If you'd only asked" attempts to correct normal growth of plants. I can't count the number of times ferns have been defoliated because they "had scale" which was sporangia.
