Last year I had so many bearded iris plants. The foliage is very healthy but only 2 bloomed.

By chance did you fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer? That will give you lots of green but few blooms. Also, are they getting at least 6 hours of sun a day? I have great luck with my iris bed planted on the southeast side of a solid fence; I have 20 planted and all 20 bloomed this year. On the other hand I have 5 planted on the northwest side of a fence and only 2 or 3 bloom each year. They don't get sun until the afternoon.

I never use fertilizer on them and they do get plenty of sun. Last year they were fantastic. Someone even stopped to take a photo. Could they be too crowded or do they have a limited life span?

Crowding will reduce the bloom.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.
