Help! Seems like I'm buying a new pressure sprayer every year. They break, they leak, they don't hold pressure, o-rings can't be replaced, etc. I've started buying cheap ones because the more expensive ones don't last any longer. I cringe every time I send another one to the landfill (our recycling progam doesn't take them).

I'd love to get a pump-type (pressurized) sprayer or a battery powered one (pref. rechargeable) that will last for more than 1 or 2 seasons.

I could probably use both a small (2 quart) and large (2-3 gallon) one.

Recommendations for types/brands?

Thank you!

Hi Jill @critterologisf

We only buy Solo brand sprayers because that is the brand I've seen professionals using most often.

Ours are all backpack style, 3 gallon size. We've had some of them for 20 years. Nothing has ever broken.

We recently replaced the handle assembly on one. The trigger spring eventually weakens and then it doesn't shut off completely when released, and so dribbles a little. I was always able to force it closed by pushing up on the handle but that was a nuisance after awhile so we replaced it. The handle assembly is available separately for less than $20. The entire wand with nozzle can also be purchased for less than $30. I've never replaced an O-ring!

We have 5 now. For me, it was too much of a nuisance to have to clean one to change to a different type of product. So, one is for Roundup (glyphosate), one for broadleaf herbicides, one for grass-only killers such as Ornamec, one for Lontrel only (which we use over-the-top in our daylily field), and one for insecticides & fungicides (rarely used),

They're not used very often, at most 4-5 times a year each. The fan nozzle of the one we use most often needs replacing now after all these years.

I usually don't use more than 2 gallons at a time now because I'm small and not getting younger.

Even if I only need to mix and use 1/2 gallon I prefer the backpack. It's not that heavy. Being able to pump with one hand while using the spray wand with the other is so much more efficient that a carried tank with a pump top.

Plus, the pressure is almost instantly adjustable by changing how much the handle is pumped. It's easy to go from trickle to wide and heavy in a few pumps.

Pat! Thank you SO much for taking the time to post that detailed recommendation. I grabbed a Walmart brand sprayer so I could get my poison ivy and thistles sprayed, but I could really use a couple more, for the reasons you mentioned. I didn't realize the backpack ones could be pumped without taking them off your back -- good to know!

I'm going to Amazon now to look for Solo sprayers.

Thanks again!!

I put both the 3 gallon Solo backpack piston sprayer and the 2.25 gallon handheld professional sprayer (has a carry strap and pressure release that the 2 gallon non-professional version lacks) into my "save for later" Amazon cart. Since both are sold by Amazon, I figure there's a chance they'll go on sale during Prime Days (July 11 & 12). The handheld is currently 20% off, but we'll see.

Hi Jill @critterologist

You're very welcome! I think you'll love the convenience of pump-as-you-go and how easy it is to regulate the pressure.

I've been eyeing getting this nozzle [link below]. I think it could be very useful. You might consider trying it.

BTW, it says not to use wettable powders with the piston pump. I have a few times used it with Gallery wettable powder when I was mixing it with liquid Surflan (pre-emerge herbicides). One problem with WPs and piston pumps, besides the friction, is keeping a WP agitated to stay in suspension. The Surflan is a viscous liquid and helped keep it suspended. I've only done that a handful of times.

Anytime you have a quick question about using it, send a Treemail if you want. I usually check in a couple times a week.

That nozzle does look interesting.

Thanks again for all the info! I'm looking forward to having a couple of sprayers that actually LAST.

Jill,

You're very welcome! I think you'll love how much more efficient a backpack is to use.
