OK, I'm a sucker for rescue plants, I'll just admit that upfront.
This poor plant just came into my care. I think it is a Dieffenbachia. It used to actually have leaves, but just when the summer heat hit someone decided it was being overwatered. Now it's having a near death experience, but still trying.
So, I plant-napped it and brought it home. Started with a thorough watering and leaf rinse, let it drain well, and set it in a low/medium light spot. Soil and pot seem to drain well, I'm disinclined to re-pot in its weak condition.
I'm not at all familiar with Dieffenbachia, so would be happy to get any and all plant care advice. I do know that it's poisonous, I'll refrain from grazing on what little greenery it has left.
Thanks for any help!

Wow. Get it out of that soggy ass soil and into a nice fresh well draining mix ASAP.
Dieffenbachia will grow as emersed aquatics, but they don't like to be potted in a mess like that when grown as terrestrials.

Thanks Gina, good call. I went ahead and repotted this morning. Bottom of the old pot was very "mucky" indeed.
Roots still look OK, I think it has a chance.
I repotted into better soil and a couple of rehab pots. Decided to split off the smaller pieces into a smaller pot. If they grow, I'll eventually put them all back together, but that might be awhile.
Unpotted and rinsed off:

New pots and soil:

Now to give it time and see how it does.

I'm much more familiar with Sansevieria and Dracena, which need little water and lots of light.
Would the Dieffenbachia be more like peace lilies? My peace lily started doing much better when I moved it to a shady spot and kept it watered twice a week, with an occasional soak. I like to group plants together that have similar cultural requirements. Should the Dieffenbachia go with the Dracena or the Spathiphyllum?
Any care advice is very welcome!
Thank You!

A dry moment is an unhappy one for Dief, but strangely, once the leaves are gone, the stems can wait for a long time for moisture to return. Clinically interesting but since we're in it for the gorgeous leaves, try to keep as moist as possible w/o risking rotting the roots. I'm sure you'll get along well with it if you can keep a peace lily looking good.

I like your strategy of splitting it up to double your odds. Cramped, tangled roots can be a problem for some plants. Dief roots are BIG and need room to roam.

Thanks for asking! It's been about a month now.
They're slowly coming along. Smiling The new leaves look good, but are solid green, no variation at all. I'm hoping they'll get a bit of color when they get larger.
I've been keeping it moist, and continue in a lower light area.

I rescued one of these recently it was in water logged compost, the roots were not getting what they needed and the plant looked sick and I did the same as what you have done, and it seems to be recovering.

Dieffenbachia CAN grow I in water as emersed aquatics. But they CAN'T grow in a small container of waterlogged soil. So can Aglaonema. These all grow in my greenhouse pond and stream. They are rooted in the muck at the bottom. These were all rescues off the Lowe's dead rack, nothing over $5 LOL
