Thread OP

I've had it for about 9 days since getting it at the garden center. My only thoughts are- under-watering or root shock from being moved into a house. What do you guys think ? Also I'm not too sure on how to water these guys. Do they like to be soaked through the pot, or just 16oz of water every week?

I'm not going to sugar coat it I'm just going to give you the bad news.
Even though this palm, Ravenea rivularis, is one of THE most commonly sold palms for interiorscape, it's also probably THE worst choice for that scenario. Many people think it should not be allowed to be sold as a 'house palm'.

In situ this palm grows in Madagascar in standing water in the bogs that exist along rivers. It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to overwater this palm. It LIKES to be waterlogged. Growing it in clay soil is advised, because clay holds water.

Even though the roots love to stand in water as emersed aquatics, if water is allowed to hit the crown too many times, this palm is very susceptible to crown rot.

It is also very susceptible to pest infestation in the house because it needs moving air.

This palm gets to be 100ft tall in the wild. Well grown specimens outdoors in California and Florida have reached half that. It's not cold tolerant either.

Because its so NOT a good candidate for interiors cape you'd think that the box stores and nurseries would quit selling it, but the high failure rate ensures that people will try more than once to grow this palm, wasting money but lining the pockets of the plant industry.

I know there must be someone out there who could pipe up and say, I grow this well in my house. But I have not found them yet

Hi Tori98, Welcome! to the site!

Majesty Palm is often sold as a houseplant but it's extremely difficult to give them enough light when indoors, even right in front of a bright window may not be sufficient and as Gina mentioned, they are water loving palms and the soil should never be allowed to dry out completely but as a container plant, they also require good aeration around their roots and good drainage.

Yes Lin brings up a good point about the light. In the wild they often grow in areas described as 'raped' forest, meaning the trees have been cut and pillaged, or 'gallery' forest where there is a big break in the canopy

Hey friends,
I do have it under a grow light for 8 hrs a day. So I guess I need to soak this plant but not drown it. I also don't see any signs of pests.
Or, would y'all suggest returning it to the store? I don't even know if that's an option. They did have an Areca palm but it was more expensive.
It's a beautiful palm, I'd hate to have to return it Sad

Your grow light is to be honest, inadequate. Houseplants that utilize grow lights need that light to be running at LEAST 14 hours a day to deliver the amount of light the plant would get outside. And 14 hours a day is not equivalent to full sun, its equivalent more to bright indirect light.

Areca palms are also mostly outdoor palms. They are very common in the landscape in Florida where they largely grow in full sun.

A better choice for interiors cape would be Chamaedorea. Either the Cat Palm, C. cataractarum, or the Parlor palm, C. elegans. Or the 'bamboo' palm, C. sefrizii

Thanks for the recommendation. The nursery said they can take it back since it's still in sellable condition. I'm
not sure I want to buy a humidifier for the majesty.
I might look into the cat palm instead. I can also set the light timer to 12 hrs, but it is what it is since I'm in a basement.

I agree, better choices for low indoor lighting would be either of these:
Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans)
Cat Palm (Chamaedorea cataractarum)

Understood. Good luck
