Hello again all! Hoping next year (after SO many purchases the last couple of months) to be able to share beautiful pics with everyone else's. I've been eyeballing the Japanese Iris until I saw the Flatties (correct word?). https://wiki.irises.org/TbFthr...

Since plants with higher than normal water needs are not the best fit for me, the flattie form seemed a better match. I realize we're nearing the end of the selling season but wondering if any of you have suggestions for a vendor that has a good selection of these types of iris. Crossing Fingers! Thank you!!

You can’t begin to make a difference!” After a few moments thought, she bent down, picked up another starfish & hurled it as far as she could into the ocean. Then she looked up at the man and replied, “Well, I made a difference to that one!” Be the change you wish to see in the world. http://www.stillsthatspeak.com...

A search of the NGA iris database reveals that so far, there are only three TB flatties that have gotten Awards of Merit. See https://garden.org/plants/grou...

Two of the three were hybridized by Thomas Johnson at Mid-America Gardens, so I suggest trying there.

They don't need awards of merit to be pretty. That said not all flatties will go totally flat for you though several do. Thomas Johnson's are really good. An oldie, Frosty Moonscape is beautiful when flat. They are out there, just hard to find places open at this point in the year. Mid-America closes today. Blue J used to carry a bunch of the older flatties but don't know if they are still open for the season.

I've grown several over the years, and when they perform as expected, they can be very beautiful.. Besides not always opening fully flat, they can be top heavy and fall over. Most have been a little slower to increase, and some don't bloom very heavily for me. But I sure do love them.. Smiling

Mary Contrary- this is the one that waas top-heavy, but maybe not a flattie with all those extra pieces..

@Henhouse - those are beautiful...really like that last one! Do you remember what vendor you purchased yours from?

Voulez Vous is one of Tom Johnson's so you can get it from Mid-America...... next year. It is sold out for this year.
