Hi Floridian,

Just wanted to clarify whether these seedlings are grown from seeds collected from the cultivar 'Chandra'? If so, they almost certainly won't produce copies of 'Chandra'. In that case I'd like to move this photo to the generic Adenium entry.

On the other hand, if 'Chandra' is a seed-grown strain, then it's fine for the photo to stay here.

Ohhhh, you are right! These are seeds I collected from a grafted Chandra. Genetics roulette at play. So this photo should be moved to generic section.

For clarification - How are these seedlings classified once they bloom? If some seedlings bloom true, which some percentage should, is it correct to call them Chandra or will these be unnamed cultivars?

Thanks for clarifying, Floridian! These seedlings will all be unnamed cultivars, even if some look similar to 'Chandra' - they won't be genetically identical.

Oopps just read this one, which means all my seedlings need to be moved to the generic Adeniums too. Since Adenium seeds produces seedlings that do not come true to the parent pod, the only photos we can add are seeds, propagations by cuttings and grafted plants (clone) of the same cultivar.

Thanks! How are Adenium cultivars named? Is there an official process to register names?

Oops 😬 I guess my response didn't post. I don't think there is a way to register this in USA. I think you can register but outside US. And the way, we we grow a number of desert roses seedlings, we could be out a lot of money Hilarious!

You and I might have to start our own organization where we can register our own "seed grown" desert roses. Most well known adenium (or plumeria) growers do not register their seed grown "unique" cultivars but they have their own website to post their "marketing name" and they have the US vendors use their photo from their website when they sell their named varieties. Once these are commercially available these grafted varieties can be added in the database with the proof of the link where these varieties are sold.

Meantime, since I am not yet retired, I just add in the caption the "name" of my own seedgrown varieties and upload the photo under the generic database entry.

@Australis, if the caption is clarified (just like the seeds) that these are "seedlings of Chandra (or cultivar name)" can these seedlings entry be left on the mother plant database.

Reason I asked is these are truly seedlings grown from the seedpods of the grafted cultivars that it is named after. So it would be interesting to see what the seedlings of the cultivars will look like? We know it is not genetically the same, but still it is produced by the cultivar as shown.

@GigiPlumeria - I think in general we don't want seedlings or plants that are not the named cultivar in the cultivar entry - it can end up being very confusing. In those cases we recommend that they go in the genus entry and the caption (or a discussion thread under that photo) is used to provide additional information.
