In the heat I am not doing much except planning for next year. I garden in containers, both large and small. Does anyone have fragrant plants for either full Texas sun or morning sun/afternoon shade? They can be either perennials or annuals. I planted a bush type jasmine this spring but have been disappointed in the fragrance. I have to get my nose right up in it before I smell the fragrance ( and it is nice then)

When it is too hot to garden, I am doing the same, shopping and planning for the next season.

I have had lilies in container that are fragrant but their bloom time is limited. So many plants that bloom are that way.

I also have citrus in large containers. Their blooms smell wonderful but they need winter protection.

I will be interested to see what suggestions you receive.

Does vitex grow up there? don't remember offhand, I do know old fashioned lilacs grew in Oklahoma, but Frisco may be too blackland.

I'm looking for plants that would grow in containers. DH doesn't want to put anything in the ground 🤨
We had one in our yard in College Station. It was extremely vigorous but can't say I noticed much fragrance.

We can't grow the old fashioned lilacs down here - the ones down here are the Persian lilacs ( I think I remember) and they have no fragrance. But no, won't do well in a container at all. Vitex do have fragrance, probably also need ground planting. Frisco is in a strange in between area of caprock and prairie and scrub trees. Container plants, well, most plants have blooming cycles, so you only get a few times of fragrance. Sorry, will keep thinking on it.

Hi, I have gardened in Central TX and in E TX.
These are some fragrant plants that have done well in containers for me:

Stock, Lathyrus odoratus, and/or Evening primrose. Sow seeds in Dec thru early Jan. and protect from frost.

Honeysuckle, the wild white kind. In my experience, tame varieties like Pink honeysuckle, and those sold by plant sellers have no fragrance. Needs a 3-5 gallon container.

Crocus bulbs, preferably Saffron crocus. Plant Nov-Jan. and protect from deer, bunnies, squirrels, and human thieves.
Daffodil bulbs, types that specify they are fragrant. best planted Dec thru Feb
Freesia bulbs (best planted Nov thru Jan, protected from frost.)
Hyacinth bulbs (best planted Dec thru Feb, protected from frost.)
Narcissus, paperwhite. best planted Nov thru Jan, protected from frost.)

Nicotiana persica, flowering tobacco. Shade tolerant. Needs a 1-3 gal. pot

Gardenia, frost resistant type. Needs a 3-5 gal container and specialty gardenia soil.
Must be brought into protected area like a shed or garage in winter.

Mountain laurel Sophora sp. and Butterfly bush Buddleia. Both a 3-5 gal container. Buddleia prefers humid dappled shade such as near a pond/fountain

Chocolate Cosmos. Protect from deer & herbivorous wildlife.

Tuberose, night blooming Orchid Cactus/ Epiphyllum Oxypetalum, Ginger lily AKA butterfly ginger/ Hedychium coronarium, & "Root beer plant" Piper auritum: These are all tropicals. Need a 3-5 gal container and specialty potting soil made for tropical plants.
All these MUST be brought into protected 40F or warmer area like a home, or garage in winter.

Fragrant herbs, several, OTHER than Lavender which always dies due to heat.
Successful ones include:
Lemon balm (part shade)
Lemongrass
Beebalm/Monarda
Basils, various
Mints, various

Hope this helps! Smiling
