Because squirrels go after tulip bulbs, I have planted the bulbs in plastic pots, sunk them in the ground, and put a piece of wire or plastic mesh over the top. That has worked fine. I'm wondering if I can sink the pots in my 7-8" high wooden raised beds, or will the bulbs end up freezing? I'm in zone 6, so the temps do go below freezing at times in the winter. Thanks for your input!

I think they'll be OK.
Plant it and they will come.

I agree tulips grow the best in 55' temps. As long as it doesn't go below 29-32' they will not turn to mush.

Tulips like to freeze. I have tulips now that have been thriving since before I bought my house in 2003. Two years ago, it was -38F, and I'm pretty sure the same tulips were growing back in the mid 90s when it was below -40F. I'd worry more about winter thaws than freezing temps in Zone 6.
