Hi there-

I am located in a Chicago suburb. I have a pot of succulents that's been doing great, especially since I don't have much of a clue about them. We've had a lot of rain and out of nowhere one of them stretched out and is going to flower. Was this supposed to happen? Should I let it flower?

As a secondary question, I don't want it to die or bolt when I have to bring it in for the winter.

I attached two current pictures. Any thoughts or guidance is very much appreciated.

Hi & welcome! What a great pot!!

It looks like this, about to bloom. I'm not familiar with the life cycle:
Dunce's Cap (Orostachys iwarenge)

For the second time this week, I was able to ID a plant because I saw it in an online catalog. Hilarious! All I can give you is a name because I've never actually seen this plant in person: Orostachys iwarenge "Chinese Dunce Cap"

It's already flowering, no point in trying to stop it. Appreciate the look, it's very cute.
This plant is monocarpic, meaning that each rosette that flowers will then die. That's its natural life, you can't stop it.
So, when you bring it in, plan on eventually removing dead rosettes and planting those new little offsets in their place. I'll just guess that the babies will take at least two years to grow and flower then re-start the cycle.
Mixed pots can be a little tricky to keep balanced, as you have plants that grow to different sizes at different rates. If you need to, you can split off some into their own pots, or prune and trim back.
I'd start a pot with just a few of the dunce's caps babies, just to make sure they don't all get run over by the other plants before they can mature.
It's a very nice looking planting now, but you have to be ready to take care of it as the plants grow and change.
It's a good thing when our plants keep growing!
Welcome!
