My snake plant is leaning badly and I am not sure the specific issue. There are two spots like the one in the picture which are leaning very heavily. I also may need to change the soil as it might not be securing the plant in place. Thank you.

Hi & welcome! Are you able to add a pic of the whole plant? Is it leaning toward a window?

The two sections that look like that are pulling the rest of the leaves down and my attempt to shift the soil didn't help

It looks like it has been in lower light and dry soil for a while. Is that the usual spot? Are the blinds usually open during daylight hours? How long have you had it? How long has it been in the current pot & soil?

I see two issues here.
The plant looks like it's leaning towards the window. They grow towards the light. If you can, put a plant light directly overhead. That should help straighten it up.
Also, it's not the soil that holds the plant up. It's the roots. I suspect your roots are shallow and weak. When you repot, think about gardening for the roots.
Start with a pot with lots of drainage. Use a cactus potting mix with added grit. When you water, water thoroughly until the soil is wet and water runs out the bottom. Then let it get quite dry before watering again, this may be two weeks or more. Roots follow the water, but not into soggy soil.
The trick is to get the roots to grow to the bottom of the pot, that will hold the plant more upright and improve its overall health.

Agree with above, plus I'd consider a slimmer pot, filled to the top. Adding to what Ms Doe said about soil: a grittier mix with more mineral content than organic matter will anchor the roots better than the fluffy stuff. More pumice, less peat.

Although Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata) is considered a low light plant, yours is likely leaning towards the most available light source and the pot appears a bit large to me. Snake Plants prefer snug roots.

Maybe 3 years. The current pot I have had less than a year. I repotted it late last night. That is the usual spot and I keep the shade open all day. I do probably need to water it a little more often.

Thanks for the responses. I will water more often and get a snugger pot. Also look into a light for it. The soil I have been using is for cactus. Is there a particularly good brand/variety?

Not being a purist, I just use whatever cactus mix is available (usually Miracle Gro) and add a lot of pumice, maybe 30% or more (depending on what I'm potting). You can substitute perlite, not my preference but perfectly fine and usually more easily available. I think snakes can take more organic matter that some other succulents, but the goal is to achieve excellent drainage that allows all excess water to freely drain through while retaining what the plant needs โ€”evenly distributed throughout the media along with oxygen. This is different from how peaty media tends to accumulate water at the bottom of the pot where it gets soggy and anaerobic (no oxygen) and rots the roots. This also allows you to water completely and more frequently without fear of overwatering. Don't forget to fertilize, lightly and infrequently. Every potted plant needs human intervention for nutrients, even if they are content with only a little snack.
