Thread OP

[admin split post off an old 2019 thread about pursalane]

I'm not sure if it's the same as what's taking over my front yard and flower bed, but mine looks like a Mimosa tree leaf. Is that what yours looks like? I know it's not, but the stems look the same as yours. They're red, kind of. I'm going to research Purslance and see if it's the same.
Sorry for your problems and here's hoping you find a way to get rid of them whatever they are.

This post is very old. You should request this question be split off from the old post and then add some photos of your plant.

If Chaplain hoped to continue the conversation and contact those who had posted in the previous discussion, this separation could be frustrating.

Hi & welcome, @Chaplain88 ! Are you able to add a pic of your mystery plant?

To the inquiry of the plant taking over 'out lawns', yes, it has a red stem and leaves that do resemble a mimosa trees'. When it gets nighttime, they close or if you pull them and give them a minute, they close.
To the post about posting pictures; I'd love to, but I can't seem to be able to find a way to do it.
I have an android phone and the pictures are on my camera icon that has a little square that when touched, it pulls that photo.
Sorry, upload/download sounds like a foreign language to me. I'll keep working on it. I tried to select share, then some sites appear, you choose one. I don't have National Gardening Assoc. as a choice.
It'll work out.
Thanks

Hi Chaplain 88, Welcome! to the site

You didn't list a general location but your weedy plant sounds like a variety of Mimosa.

Here's our database entry for Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) where you can view photos for comparison. This plant is considered highly invasive in some parts of the world.

Lin, I was wondering the same thing. Where is this lawn? M. pudica requires a warm climate. Too cold for it here.

According to Wikipedia in the contigious USA it grows in Louisiana, Florida, Hawaii, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Puerto Rico, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia. I wonder if it is self-seeding so keeps coming back that way. Apparently does well in nutrient-poor disturbed soils. I'd guess improving the condition of the lawn with irrigation and fertilization might help fix the problem, if Mimosa pudica is what it is. I had one as a houseplant once as a kid, I found the way it closed up fascinating!

IDK about trusting WIKI for that kind of thing. But there doesn't seem to be a consensus for this plant among some of the traditional sources of this kind of info.

The site-which-shall-not-be-named says Z11+.

USDA
Geographic Potential
Based on three climatic variables, we estimate that about 22 percent of the United States is suitable for the establishment of Mimosa pudica (Fig. 1). This predicted distribution is based on the species' known distribution
elsewhere in the world and includes point-referenced localities and areas of occurrence. The map for M. pudica represents the joint distribution of Plant Hardiness Zones 7-13, areas with 10-100+ inches of annual precipitation,
and the following Kรถppen-Geiger climate classes: tropical rainforest, tropical savanna, humid subtropical, and marine west coast.

BONAP is confused, showing FL, OH, VA, MD, but not the states in between.

...but if it's an annual, how can it have a hardiness zone? And if it is an annual, it's not suitable as a houseplant.
Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica)

RHS says it's a perennial.

I agree about trusting wikis although in that case it gave a reference "Distribution of Mimosa pudica in the United States of America, Natural Resources Conservation Service, United States Department of Agriculture."

The link given does not work for me though, just opens a plain blue page.

I was ambiguous there, sorry. I meant the USDA distribution reference cited by Wikipedia didn't open properly.

No problem. I knew what you meant because that is the one that is a .pdf report (vs. a regular website page.)

There seems to be confusion among the various sources about the hardiness of M. pudica. That's always very frustrating for me.

Perhaps part of the problem is that it can be either annual or "short-lived" perennial and also self-seeds, so in theory it could self-seed in areas too cold for the plant itself to survive? That does happen with some "summer annuals" that are really perennial but can't take the cold yet sometimes volunteer in subsequent years.

Exactly! That is why hardiness zones are so informative. If a plant is a true annual, trying to cultivate it perennially is an exercise in futility in any location.
