I have a fairly big plant..sorry you can tell me the name by the picture 🙈 when I bought it it had three intertwined branches two died and there is just one active now...it seems fairly happy spouting new leaves however I was wondering if there would be a way to cut that one living stem and start over as it's so tall/straggling... Please don't judge I'm a new plant mum but I want to do the best for them.

Hi and Welcome! !
No judging, we are all on a learning curve, well, there might be a few here who say they know it all Big Grin
That's a money plant, scientific name escapes me, but they are often sold twined like that.
I don't think it is a good one to try and cut that stem and root as a new plant.
Let's see what others say.
In fact, that is a tree and it seems many come here posting unhappiness as the thing just doesn't stay happy in a pot, too very long.
Plant it and they will come.

Pachira aquatica.

Agreed. If it got too dry, that would make it unhappy. The pot looks very small, but the angle of the pic could be exaggerating the proportions. More light could help also.

If it doesn't work out with this plant, dry a dwarf umbrella (Schefflera arboricola.) A similar looking plant that doesn't seem to be as sensitive, gauging from the discussions over the years. Many more people ask about struggling Pachiras (contantly) vs. the number of questions about struggling Scheffs (rare.)

The stem is ugly but the top looks vigorous enough. I don't think you can do anything with the lower part. Maybe repot it in a bigger container and put it behind a tallish piece of furniture...
You could try cutting off the green part and rooting it in water. If it works, it will take a month or more and you'll have a much shorter, but maybe still fairly spindly plant that probably needs staking.
I do prefer an nice hardy umbrella.

I like the braid, but it looks like 2 of the trunks are dead, which may put the remaining one in jeopardy if it becomes constricted by the dead ones.

I didn't see any completed anecdotes about propagating Pachira in the propagation forum on this site, but that doesn't mean it won't work. The one person who asked about it didn't come back and tell us if it worked. That was years ago. You're welcome to start a new discussion and ask for fresh info.

It looks like your green stem is long enough to cut about half of it off and give it a try. That way, if it doesn't work, all you have done is pruned your tree. Most indoor trees need to be periodically pruned anyway or they will get too tall for the available height-space. If a plant grows taller than the top of a window, the top part usually starts to decline or lean drastically back down toward the light.

If you have some pruners and patience, you could start snipping away the dead parts and removing as much dead material as you can down to the soil level - if the trunks haven't fused together (inosculation.)

The trunks don't look as if they've fused, but they're pretty tightly wound, and dead wood won't easily unwind. Maybe cutting them off one curl at at time would work. Trouble is, the remaining live one is all corkscrewy and might not be able to stand up.
That's a plant in serious trouble. Sooner or later, drastic measures will be necessary. This may help https://www.southernliving.com...
