Seen in NW Missouri in September a couple of years ago. It kind of looks like a Wooly Worm or Wooly Bear. But the color is wrong. Also, if anyone knows what kind of snake that is too? Or I can post the danger noodle elsewhere for ID.

Nope. The snake was actually startled by the caterpillar when it was touched. Then the caterpillar just moseyed on past. Pretty funny to watch.

I think @porkpal was saying that as a joke because there's no picture of the caterpillar you need identified.

I haven't the slightest what species your snake might be, but then again, I'm as far from a reptile expert as I am from being a billionaire. It's cool, though, and great photo!

Johannian, I'm confused. Doesn't the caterpillar show up on your screen in both photos??
(Unfortunately, I don't know what it is, either, but I'm not certain that all Woolly Bears display the same dark saddles)

Could the caterpillar be a Yellow Wooly Bear (Spilosoma virginica), instead of a Banded Wooly Bear (Pyrrharctia isabella)?

Lol, thanks, Zoë! I guess I just thought it was a rock. Hilarious!

Ok, no joke was intended by porkpal then, my apologies!

Hilarious!
There is more than one wooly caterpillar in the world. I have white ones on my sycamore. And I think, some yellow ones have been on lambsquarter.

Try Crayfish Snake (dang there are a lot of snakes in Missouri Blinking
