What kind of Kalanchoe is it? Are you able to add a pic?
If it is K. blossfeldiana, they drop the lowest leaves when the soil gets too dry or the roots are not voluminous or healthy enough to deliver the amount of moisture required to keep more foliage hydrated. Foliage can also be dropped as the stem turns woody, or if insignificant light below the upper leaves prevents the lowest leaves from being able to contribute a worthwhile amount of photosynthesis.
